Conservation Status

General Status in Canada Help: Secure

COSEWIC Status Help: Not assessed

Cedar Waxwing populations are stable and are currently not considered to be of conservation concern in North America. Mortality frequently occurs from collisions with stationary and moving objects, and local populations are vulnerable to pesticide poisonings and from eating fermented fruit. However, recent trends from North American Breeding Bird Surveys (BBS) suggest a slight increase in populations, which could be attributed to a range extension. The regeneration and succession of farmland to wooded habitats, the increased planting of fruit trees in urban and agricultural settings, and the elimination of DDT are all factors that may currently benefit this species.
