Despite geographic variability, populations have experienced some significant, long-term declines in recent decades. Reductions in the quantity and quality of preferred coniferous forests on the breeding grounds could be partially responsible, due to logging and other human activities. The loss of mature tropical forests, which the species prefers during the non-breeding season, could also be contributing to these declines. Although declines have not been as rapid as for some similar species across its range, careful monitoring of the Swainson’s Thrush is warranted to ensure population declines do not worsen.
