Conservation Status

General Status in Canada Help: Secure

COSEWIC Status Help: Not assessed

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) has documented steady and significant declines in the United States since 1966 to 2007, but populations have remained stable in Canada over the same period. Habitat loss, grazing pressures, and urbanization in the western United States are the likely causes of these local declines. Little is known about this species on its breeding or wintering grounds, especially how populations are regulated or limited. Because it overwinters in tropical forests, it is likely that the ongoing destruction of tropical forests will negatively impact this species in the near future, if that is not already occurring.
