Breeding Bird Surveys indicate North American populations have changed little between 1966 and 2007 and numbers are thought to be relatively stable. Gray Catbirds prefer early successional habitats and as a result, probably benefit from some human activities and development. Regenerating logged forests provide suitable nesting habitat as do wood thickets in urban and rural areas. The removal of fencelines in agricultural lands has reduced habitat in some areas. As a nocturnal migrant, catbirds are susceptible to fatal collisions with lit transmission towers and buildings.
