Varied Thrush
Varied Thrush Ixoreus naevius
Conservation StatusGeneral Status in Canada : SecureCOSEWIC Status : Not assessedAlthough not currently in decline, the Varied Thrush could be a candidate for conservation action in the future because it prefers older, undisturbed forests. Recent studies in the southern portion of its breeding range demonstrated that nest predation at forest edges was significantly higher than in nearby forest interiors. The species seems to avoid small, isolated forest fragments under 16 hectares in size, possibly in response to perceived predation pressure. The Varied Thrush is also a common victim of window collisions, vehicle collisions and cat predation. High rates of winter mortality have been observed during periods of extremely cold weather or heavy snow. Reference(s)George, T. L. 2000.
