Conservation Status

General Status in Canada Help: Secure

COSEWIC Status Help: Not assessed

Nests of this species are frequently parasitized by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) in agricultural areas or highly disturbed sites. American Redstarts demonstrate some area sensitivity in eastern portions of the breeding range, whereby density is reduced at or near edges. This species is socially subordinate to the sympatric (i.e., overlapping in geographic areas) Least Flycatcher (Empidonax minimus), though consequences of this competition are not well understood.
