Conservation Status

General Status in Canada Help: Secure

COSEWIC Status Help: Not assessed

Red-breasted Nuthatch populations are currently considered to be stable and secure. Populations are affected and possibly regulated by conifer cone crops, and by the availability of fir (Abies spp.), birch (Betula spp.), and poplar (Populus spp.) trees in appropriate decay and diameter classes for future nesting sites. Forestry practices need to consider the nesting and foraging requirements of this resident species to avoid negative impacts on breeding populations in the long-term. Collisions with stationary objects and towers can result in local morality.
