Conservation Status

General Status in Canada Help: Secure

COSEWIC Status Help: Not assessed

Blue-headed Vireos are generally sensitive to large disturbances, such as clear-cutting, because they prefer large areas of mature, contiguous coniferous forests for breeding. This requirement for larger forest stands could pose a concern, but the remoteness of their breeding habitat and the regeneration of previously logged areas into mature stands may benefit this species. The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) indicates significant population increases since the mid-1960’s. Therefore, there are no current concerns regarding the Blue-headed Vireo. Little is known about its wintering or breeding biology or factors regulating populations and these warrant further investigation.
